Special Features of TAA Award-Winning Textbooks: From the 2019 Awardees

At the 32nd Annual Textbook & Academic Authoring Conference in Philadelphia, PA, TAA members Al Trujillo and Dave Dillon hosted a panel of textbook award-winning authors to share features that they considered instrumental in the success of their books.  

The panel consisted of Jocelyn Nelson, author of Gateway to Music: An Introduction to American Vernacular, Western Art, and World Musical Traditions, 1st Edition, Frank Carrano and Timothy Henry, co-authors of Data Structures and Abstractions with Java, 5th Edition, and Monica Sherwin and Dave Hall, co-authors of two winning titles, Oklahoma Studies Weekly – Our State, 6th Edition and New Mexico Studies Weekly – Our State, 1st Edition. Below is a summary of the textbook features they felt were most significant in the achievement of their 2019 Textbook Excellence awards.

Member Spotlight: John W. Budd

TAA member John W. Budd is a Professor at the University of Minnesota where he holds the Industrial Relations Land Grant Chair, and both a textbook & academic author in the employment relations writing discipline.

His most recent publication is Labor Relations: Striking a Balance, 5th ed. (New York: McGraw-Hill Education, 2018). The 1st edition won a “Texty” Textbook Excellence Award in 2005. He has also published three previous university press books on work and employment relations.

Member Spotlight: Kathleen P. King

TAA member Kathleen P. King is a Professor at the University of Central Florida, CEO of Transformation Education LLC, and both a textbook and academic author in the education, faculty development, and adult learning writing disciplines.

Her most recent publication, Technology and Innovation in Adult Learning published by Wiley/Jossey-Bass, is a 2018 Textbook Excellence Award (“Texty”) winner. She has published 32 books – 22 as author/co-author/editor and 10 as series editor.

Member Spotlight: Kevin Patton

TAA member Kevin Patton is a professor and textbook author in the human anatomy & physiology discipline.

The 10th edition of his textbook, Anatomy & Physiology, will be released in February 2018. This two-semester textbook for health professions training recently won a Texty award (2016). He also has several one-semester books: Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology, Structure & Function of the Body, and The Human Body in Health & Disease. Besides some lab manuals, he has also authored the reference book Mosby’s Handbook of Anatomy & Physiology and student manual Survival Guide for Anatomy & Physiology.

Member Spotlight: Michael R. Solomon

TAA member Michael R. Solomon is a Professor of Marketing in the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University and is a textbook and academic author in the marketing discipline.

He has published approximately 30 textbooks (including international adaptations) and over 60 journal articles. His most recent textbook is Consumer Behavior: Buying, Having and Being 12th ed., published by Pearson Education.

Member Spotlight: Al Trujillo

TAA member Al Trujillo is a Professor of Oceanography at Palomar College and a textbook author in the Earth Science: Oceanography discipline.

Most recently, he has published the 12th edition of Essentials of Oceanography with Pearson Education. This textbook is the market-leading college-level oceanography textbook worldwide. He has worked on this title since its 6th edition. This book is also a TAA “Texty” Textbook Excellence Award winner [10th edition, 2011] and a TAA McGuffey Longevity Award winner [12th edition, 2017]. He is also a contributing author for the three oceanography chapters from “Unit 5: The Global Ocean” in Earth Science, 15th Edition and co-author of Introductory Oceanography, 10th Edition (a higher-level, more robust oceanography textbook), both published by Pearson Education.

Member Spotlight: Courtland L. Bovee

TAA member Courtland L. Bovee is a full time textbook author of four business textbooks, co-authored with John Thill and published by Pearson.

His most recent publication is Business Communication Essentials, 8th Edition and he is currently co-authoring three more titles Business Communication Today, 14th Edition, Excellence in Business Communication, 13th Edition, and Business in Action, 8th Edition.

Member Spotlight: Andrew M. Pomerantz

TAA member Andrew M. Pomerantz is a Professor of Psychology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and both a textbook and academic author in the psychology discipline.

He recently published two textbooks: the brand new My Psychology (published by Worth, for Introductory Psychology courses) and Clinical Psychology (4th edition, published by SAGE). He has also published dozens of articles in peer-reviewed journals.
