I think everyone needs to print this quote and Ann Bradford — 'Tell the negative committee that meets inside your head to sit down and shut up.'tape it someplace clearly visible on his or her desk, computer, or writing space. Look at it every time you sit down to write. Quiet the voices of negativity and just write. You are capable of writing well, of writing that is worthy of others to read, you just have to believe it and shut down the voices that tell you otherwise! One of my favorite quotes, and one that fits perfectly here, was said by Muhammad Ali, “To be a great champion you must believe you are the best. If you’re not, pretend you are.” Believing in your abilities to write is half the hurdle. Once you believe that, getting words onto the page will become easier. Happy writing! [Read more…]

It is hard to believe it is the middle of October already. Make writing a scheduled part of your day.Hopefully you have settled back into a routine; most importantly a writing routine. The posts I’ve gathered for you this week focus on a variety of topics, from journal submission to author branding, to textbook prices and crowdsourced editing. 7 Ways to conduct a successful crowdfunding campaign

crowdfunding for booksBuild a successful crowdfunding campaign with these seven tips from Amanda Barbara, vice president of Pubslush, a global crowdfunding platform for books. Barbara presented a session at TAA’s 2014 TAA Conference in Baltimore, MD, June 20.

1. Pre-campaign research: The biggest DON’T of crowdfunding is starting your campaign before you’re ready. Time is a big factor in crowdfunding campaigns (most campaigns run for 30-60 days), so don’t put your project up and then try to figure out your strategy. Also, it’s very important you research your costs up front so you can create appropriate reward levels. The goal is to make money, so obviously your reward levels will be disproportionate to the amount donated. To be successful, you will need to determine how much money you’ll need to raise to complete your project AND fulfill the incentive levels. Tip: don’t forget about shipping costs!

The value of using social media to broaden your academic reach: An interview with Tanya Golash Boza

Tanya Golash-BozaTanya Golash-Boza, Ph.D., is an associate professor of Sociology at the University of California, Merced. She is widely published, with her academic works including academic and trade books, textbook chapters for edited volumes, and journal articles. Currently she is working on two primary projects, one being a book on the lives of people deported from the United States, and the second being a sociology textbook on race and racism.
